Convert x17 Configurations to the 525 Data Logger | Easy Migration Guide
Change is easy when it’s done right. With the introduction of the 525 data logger as the successor to the trusted x17 series, many users are keen to move forward, but understandably cautious about one thing: configuration complexity.
Some x17 configurations have been built up carefully over years, fine-tuned for specific applications, sites, and communication requirements. Rebuilding those from scratch would be time-consuming and error-prone. Thankfully, there’s now a much smoother path.
A Smarter Way to Upgrade
The latest release of ydocTerminal v3.32 introduces a built-in configuration converter that allows you to convert existing x17 configurations for use on the 525.
While the x17 and 525 may look similar on the surface, the 525 includes significant internal changes that make direct interpretation of x17 configuration files difficult. The converter bridges this gap by translating most settings automatically, dramatically reducing setup time.
Although no automated conversion can be guaranteed to be perfect in every scenario, the results are very close. As always, best practice applies: verify the converted configuration thoroughly before deploying the device in the field.
Secure Communications: TLS and Certificates
Security remains a priority, especially when working with TLS connections. To ensure server authenticity, the converter includes three of the most commonly used Certificate Authority (CA) certificates by default.
If your server relies on a different CA, you can easily load a custom certificate during the conversion process. It is also possible to disable server verification entirely by unchecking all CA options, but this is strongly discouraged unless you fully understand the security implications.
Handling Configuration Files Safely
Because converted configuration files are created on a PC, they cannot be safely encrypted outside of ydoc’s secured factory environment. For this reason, the recommended workflow is:
-
Convert and load the configuration onto the 525
-
Verify correct operation and functionality
-
Retrieve the configuration directly from the 525 once verified
At this point, the configuration file will be encrypted, ensuring that sensitive data such as credentials and keys remain protected. This is particularly important if configuration files are stored on portable media like USB drives, where loss or theft is a real risk.
Firmware Requirement
To load an unencrypted configuration file, the 525 must be updated to firmware version 5.2B5 or later. This firmware update enables the new configuration handling process and includes several additional improvements.
For a full overview of the changes introduced in firmware version 5.2B5, you can refer to the official release notes on the ydoc documentation site.
Upgrade with Confidence
The new configuration converter makes moving from x17 to 525 faster, safer, and far less disruptive. With careful verification and the right security practices, you can take advantage of the 525’s enhanced capabilities without losing the work already invested in your existing deployments.
